Wondrous Words Wednesday

Wondrous Words I’m still reading “My Antonia” and am still finding numerous words. :)

Lariat
(n.)
Definition: a rope for picketing grazing horses or mules.
Usage: “I wonder if she wouldn’t have scratched a little if we’d laid hold of that lariat rope!”

Range
(n.)

Definition: a kitchen appliance used for cooking food.
Usage: “Tony would… build a fire in the range on which she had cooked three meals that day.”

Planed
(v.)

Definition: to smooth or finish or flatten.
Usage: “When he planed, his hands went back and forth over the boards…”

Coroner
(n.)

Definition: a public officer whose primary function is to investigate by inquest any death thought to be of other than natural causes.
Usage: “Grandfather would bring the coroner back with him to spend the night.”

Bole
(n.)

Definition: the trunk of a tree.
Usage: “Her neck came up strongly out of her shoulders, like the bole of a tree out of the turf.”
~My Antonia

Lithographs
(n.)
Definition: copies of typed, written or drawn material
Usage: “We had files of those good old family magazines which used to publish colored lithographs of famous paintings.”

Pasteboard
(n.)
Definition: a thin firm board made of sheets of paper pasted together or pressed paper pulp.
Usage: “We hung it (the cedar tree) with.. bits of candle which Fuchs had fitted into pasteboard sockets.”

Pommel
(n.)

Definition: the upper front part of a saddle; a saddlebow.
Usage: “I could see that he was bringing in a little cedar tree across his pommel.”

coroner? that's what PB wants to be! that or a drama coach or movie director/screenplay writer. very different options, no?
