Wondrous Words Wednesday

Wondrous Words :) I haven’t done this meme in a couple weeks. To make up for it, here’s a large list of new words I’ve learned from my current literature book, My Āntonia.

Sheik or Sheikh
Usage: “I once heard a missionary say it was like the beard of an Arabian sheik.”

Intonation
(n.)

Definition: the act of chanting
Usage: “I was awed by his intonation of the word ‘Selah.’”

Selah
(n.)

Definition: a Hebrew word of unknown meaning occurring in the Old Testament psalms, and thought to be a musical direction
Usage: “I was awed by his intonation of the word ‘Selah.’”

Oracular
(adj.)

Definition: solemnly prophetic
Usage: “But, as he uttered it, it became oracular, the most sacred of words.”
~My Āntonia


Squadrons
(n.)

Definition: a multitude or horde
Usage: “Queer little red bugs came out and moved in slow squadrons around me.”
~My Āntonia


Gaudy
(adj.)

Definition: showy in a tasteless or vulgar way
Usage: “He… brought out a gaudily painted harmonica.”
~My Āntonia

Actually Selah means "meditate on this" I love that word! :P
